The Academy Curriculum

The Eastbourne Academy offers a broad and balanced personalized curriculum leading to a variety of well-chosen examination courses. The Curriculum is led across the Academy by one of the Heads of School and this role is supported by a Director of Curriculum in each Learning Community and then Curriculum Leaders for different subject areas.

In Year 7, emphasis is given to providing a solid foundation to future learning. This is done through a good variety of subject lessons, literacy and numeracy classes and the Learning Journey. Literacy and Numeracy lessons are provided in addition to English and Mathematics and provide students with the opportunity to develop advanced skills or to catch up on basic skills depending on their personal situation when they arrive at the Academy. Some of this work is delivered through smaller teaching groups and some through one to one tuition.

The Learning Journey is a course that draws its content from a range of subjects but concentrates on the Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) that students need in order to learn and that employers say are what they are looking for in young people leaving school. These include team work, research skills, independent learning and a number of other courses which develop understanding and the ability to succeed in a modern educational or work environment.
